Otto and Box Car Chief test flights

Test flight of my Otto The Gyro. Powered by an ASP .25
it flys nice. You can see it climbs into the wind each lap.
It was a little windy on the day. Phone video.

Kelly Field, Richmond

Control Line Fly-in at Kelly Field, Richmond,
Tasmania - 15th - 16th Dec. 2013

The weather was fine but windy so a few practice rounds of Rat Racing were held with some very good pit stops as well as a lot of bad ones. Never mind, that's what practice is all about.

Will Deal took a heap of photos of the weekend and you can see them   here...

Jason George got some jogging practice in while trying to land his combat wing in the windy conditions as you will see in the video below.....

It's been a bit quiet these last few days so I thought I'd post this video for a bit of fun. I hope you like it. Turn up your speakers to hear the music.

Gilly doesn't normally use his wife's computer so I should be safe unless somebody tells him :-))
(Nobody is safe when there is a video camera at the field).

I'm still bored so now it's Arthur's turn........

Indoor Control Line Trial.

Owen and Lyal Cameron and myself had some fun trying out my GeeBee indoor control liner today.
I carried out a 20 second test flight to see if everything was OK and it was. Although a little slow at 6 seconds a lap on 15 foot lines = 10.7 miles per hour (17.2 kph)!
To say it felt graceful is an understatement.

Owen managed to hover it a few times until he backed it into the floor. You will notice the panic of the camera man (me) running to disconnect the battery when the motor was stalled. We chipped a prop, no other damage.

We got in a total of 5 flights with “Crash Cameron” decking it again when trying to do a slooooow loop. It's easily repaired. The motor was running at 47 % (4700 rpm). The speed needs to be upped a little and I am looking at getting an accelerometer for the ESC. This will provide constant speed whether flying horizontal or vertical.

I had only rented the gymnasium for an hour but we reckoned it was the best hour any of us had spent. We had great fun. Now I'm waiting for Owen and Lyal to build theirs. There's even talk of slow indoor combat.
A view of the pits.

Ready for the test flight.

Oops!....Crash Cameron.

It is with great sadness that I must tell you Bob McKenzies Nobler is no longer with us.

The wreckage was exactly as you see it.

The Nobler Body Bag.
On a brighter note, I hear Nobler #2 is well on the way. It shouldn't be too long.

Alan Beggs hovers his Bislob for the first time....

Sorry about the resolution. The original video was HD but Blogspot would not let me post it. I had to keep reducing the resolution until it did. It's best viewed in the size above.

Push Rod Failure

Alan Beggs' (Townsville) own design profile stunter didn't survive the test flight.
Alan said it was very responsive and flew well until the push rod
disconnected halfway through the flight resulting in a wingover
and power dive into the deck.
The fuselage was foam sheeted with balsa.
Oh well. Back to the drawing board!

I had a similar problem with my Blue Pants a few weeks ago at George Town. One of the leadouts pulled out of the bellcrank, causing the plane to wingover and bury itself to the leading edge in the ground. The only damage was a broken prop! The bent spring on the needle valve easily straightened. I build 'em STRONG!! The leadout is now repaired and the prop replaced. Just waiting for some good weather to fly it.

Ouch!
